PSARANTONIS

De Centrale is bijzonder vereerd om de bekendste muzikant van Kreta aan het Gentse publiek voor te kunnen stellen.  Antonis Xylouris (°1937), bijgenaamd Psarantonis (Ψαραντώνης in het Grieks, Psarandonis uitgesproken) is een legendarische zanger en lyraspeler (lyra = peervormige Kretenzische knievedel, ontwikkeld uit de klassieke Byzantijnse lyra) en broer van de in 1980 overleden – en nog legendarischer – zanger Nikos Xylouris.  Psarantonis is afkomstig van Anogeia, een bergdorp van zo’n 2.500 inwoners, gelegen aan de voet van de Ida Psiloritis, de hoogste berg van Kreta.  De bewoners van de regio zijn vermaard om hun eigenzinnigheid, zwijgzaamheid, en krijgshaftigheid.  Bij elke invasie van buitenaf boden zij halsstarrig weerstand door als één moedig, grimmig en zwijgend front op te treden tegen de bezetter.  Psarantonis is voor veel Kretenzers een echte cultfiguur die deze karaktereigenschappen bijna letterlijk uitstraalt.  En zo ziet hij er ook wel een beetje uit … een beetje als Zeus in de gedaante van een verwaaide herder die net de Olympos, of beter de Ida Psiloritis is afgedaald.
Psarantonis staat bekend voor zijn unieke stemtimbre.  Zijn haast brommende zangpartijen worden afgewisseld met magistrale instrumentale partijen op zijn Kretenzische lyra.  Hoewel Psarantonis een multi-instrumentalist is, speelt hij de laatste jaren enkel en alleen nog op zijn geliefde strijkinstrument.  Drie van zijn zes kinderen zijn muzikant geworden.  Zijn oudste zoon Giorgos (Xylouris) speelt laouto en maakt de laatste tijd furore samen met de Australische drummer Jim White als het duo Xylouris White.  Dochter Niki Xylouri zingt en speelt percussie.   Ook zoon Lambis bracht al verschillende cd’s uit waarvan ‘Tambachaniotika’ (de Kretenzische rembetika) de meest markante is.  Ze begeleiden hem met haast tranceverwekkende, obsessieve ritmes op o.a. laouto (luit), mandolino (mandoline), oed en percussie.  Soms wordt dit begeleiden letterlijk “volgen”, want de ouwe vos durft midden in een concert wel eens een nieuw stuk in te zetten dat zijn groepsleden nog nooit hebben gespeeld.  Zelf speelt hij zijn liederen nooit tweemaal op dezelfde manier en afhankelijk van zijn stemming (in de zin van humeur) kan eenzelfde lied totaal anders worden ingekleurd.  Psarantonis werkte o.a. samen met Nick Cave en met Vinicio Capossela.  En alhoewel de man ondertussen op de grootste podia ter wereld stond vindt hij optredens tijdens bruiloften en andere (dorps)feesten nog steeds niet beneden zijn waardigheid.

Voor dit concert brengt Psarantonis zijn dochter Niki Xylouri en Ioannis Paximadakis mee.  De laatste staat bekend om zijn virtuositeit op de verschillende snaarinstrumenten zoals de bouzouki, de boulgari en de laouto.

De Centrale is really honored to present the most famous musician from Crete to the audience in Ghent. .  Antonis Xylouris (°1937), nicknamed Psarantonis (Ψαραντώνης in  Greek, pronounced Psarandonis ) is a legendary singer and lyra player ( lyra= pear shaped knee-fiddle, developed from the classic Byzantic lyra) and brother to the in 1980 deceased- and even more legendary – singer Nikos Xylouris.  Psarantonis originates from Anogeia, a mountain village of approximately 2,500 inhabitants, located at the foot of Ida Psiloritis, the highest mountain of Crete.  The inhabitants of the region are known for their obstinacy, silence, and martial spirit.  With each invasion from the outside they offered stubborn resistance by acting against the occupier as one courageous, grim and silent front.  Psarantonis is to many Cretans a real cult figure who excudes these traits almost literally. And that is just the way he looks. … a bit like Zeus  in the figure of a windblown  shepherd, who has just descended the Olympos, or better the Ida Psiloritis. Psarantonis is known for his unique vocal timbre. His almost growling vocals are interspersed with masterful instrumental parts on his Cretan lyra.  Although Psarantonis is a multi- instrumentalist, in recent years he only played his beloved stringed instrument. Three of his six children have become musicians.  His oldest son Giorgos (Xylouris) plays laouto and is lately being a hit with the Australian drummer Jim White as the duo Xylouris White.  Daughter Nikki Xylouris sings and plays percussion. Son Lambis also released several albums already, of which ‘Tambachaniotika’ ( Cretenzic rembetica) is the most striking.  They accompany him with almost trance like, obsessive rhythms including laouto (lute), mandolin (mandolin), oud and percussion.  Sometimes this accompanying literally becomes “following”, cause the old fox dares to put in a new piece that his group has never played, in the middle of a concert. He himself never plays his songs twice in the same way and depending on his mood, a song can get a totally different colour. Psarantonis already worked together with Nick Cave and with Italian singersongwriter Vinicio Capossela.  And although the man has been on the biggest venues in the world in the meanwhile, he still feels performances during weddings and other (village)parties  are beneath his dignity.
