THE BIG FOLK 'N' IRISH NIGHT (#02)

ft. The Helen Flaherty Band & ROOTS

For the second year in a row De Centrale organizes an amazing and incredible contemporary folk and song night . Again with two brilliant musical acts.  This year  'The Helen Flaherty Band' and 'Roots' will be  on the stage.
The night will be presented again by the Ghent-Irish singer-songwriter 'Daithi Rua'....

The Helen Flaherty Band

Helen Flaherty is of Scottish origin and especially known as the vocal and shining center of the internationally renowned band band Shantalla. Because Helen is afflicted with an unlimited versatility and ambition, she now also spreads her wings with her own band. Performing is to Helen like a lifes elixir. Her stage is her home and her audience are her friends. Her performances are thus characterized by a warm contact with her audience. For this project as well she knows  how to surround herself with some of the best folk musicians.
In addition to the four-part vocals, the musicians also dominate the instrumental Celtic repertoire like the best. They earned their stripes in groups like The David Munnelly Band, Comas, Hot Spoons, Francy Conway, Danny Guinan, Fling,...

Helen Flaherty vocals - bodhran
Philip Masure vocals - guitar
Siard De Jong vocals - violin - cittern
Isaac Muller vocals - flutes - whistles

Roots

The essence of Roots is actually really easy: Musical stories, with which this (pop) folk band, with roots in Dendermonde, want to amaze, inspire and above all make people happy again! The band played for the first time under the name ‘Roots’ on the het M’eire Morough folkfestival in 2010. In march 2011they recorded their demo-album, called , “Back to Barley”.  Since March 2014 Roots presented her first album , “Point Blue” , to the audience. The album was recorded and produced by Erwin Libbrecht (Kadril) onder het Wild Boar Music – label.
Roots looked for their “roots” in Irish and Celtic atmospheres. However, this energetic gang of 8 musicians has very different musical backgrounds( folk, jazz, classic,…). It is probably that symbiosis of influences that makes the sound of the group unique.  Wit quite an extended instrumentarium ( guitar, bass, drum, violin, mandolin, accordion, flute, vocals,…)the group makes (folk)music accessible to a broad audience. Traditionals and own songs,  arousing instrumental, or vocally harmonious, you will get it all.  Sitting still will be quite hard…
