MÂÄK KOJO (20 jaar Mâäk!)

spiritual dialogue between roots music and avant-garde

For several years, MÂÄK has been combining wind instruments, percussion and vocals in an almost supernatural way in numerous fine musical projects that alternate various popular traditions with daring avant-garde and improvisation. During previous projects such as ALMAJMAÂ (Gnawa or Morocco) and DJEKOULOU (Bambara hunters or Mali), MÂÄK was already curiously looking for traditional transcendental music with a strong therapeutic aspect.  For KOJO, the focus is on VODUN (a.k.a. Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo, ...), the holy music from West African Benin. Mutual respect and curiosity for the artistic identity and musical integrity of the various rich groups and cultures is also central to this new project, at the crossroads between tight orchestration and spontaneous improvisation ....
