GLOBALICIOUS #05 w/ AMERICO BRITO & NIC BALTHAZAR

A Global Grooves Night

GLOBALICIOUS

Globalicious is a unique cultural event and a global grooves party. Philosopher author Bleri Lleshi (aka DJ Bruselo) successfully launched the Globalicious concept in his hometown of Brussels and allowed the formula to spread to Ghent, with local and international artists and DJs bringing various musical genres, from cumbia and Balkan to arabesque and global funk, from coupe décalé about hip hop, dancehall, reggae, dabke and so much more ..

Américo Brito & HIS BAND SURVIVOR

Américo Brito was born in Cape Verde (Ilha do Fogo) but he allreadyemigrated to Portugal at a  very young age in the late 1970s. He recorded his first album there in 1980, and it immediately became a small masterpiece: Sintado na Pracinha.

A few years later, like many other Cape Verdeans, he moved to the Netherlands, where he further expanded his life and musical career. He sets up the "Babylon" and "Djarama" groups successively.

After the split of "Djarama" in the late 1980s, he embarked on a successful solo career. In his early days, Américo Brito was not only a musician but also a creditable DJ. Both with his bands and records, he was the ambassador of Cape Verdean funana, coladeira and other African / Creole music styles.

Americo Brito meant a lot to the non-western music culture of his home base in Rotterdam. He was one of the founders (and even chose the name) of the popular Dunya Festival (1977-2012) and the Magia Festival.

Thanks in part to the reissue boom (the reissue of old LPs and singles that are regarded as forgotten gems among DJs), Américo Brito is also being re-introduced to a young (er) and hip crowd after a few quieter years ... " I was dead and buried. Now I have been dug up and I am coming back, "he tells NRC.

It is about time that Ghent also met Américo Brito.
