Mansum Ibrahimov is a classical mugham singer from Azerbaijan. He therefore sings in Azerbaijani, a language closely related to Turkish. Mansum Ibrahimov is not only popular as a mugham singer with his ensemble Qarabagh. He has also become particularly popular due to his role as Majnun in the Azerbaijani opera 'Leyli and Majnun' by composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov (1885-1948).
The Azerbaijani mugham is a traditional form of music that is particularly characterized by the great importance of improvisation. It is a very complex form of music with specific systems and concepts of musical expression that requires a very high level of professionalism from the performing artists. Although the mugham is a classical and academic form of music, it is nevertheless based on popular folk melodies, rhythms and performance techniques. There are strong ties between the Azebejan mugham, the Iranian-Arab-Turkish maqam and the Central Asian shashmaqam. It goes without saying that the mugham is particularly popular in Azerbaijan. The mugham has been recognized by UNESCO since 2003 as an intangible world heritage site.
